Sydney Jump Club held their Winter Ch'ships last Sunday in unseasonably beautiful weather, with the last few days hovering around the 20 degree mark. So much so that a lot of the horses are starting to change coats already; dunno if I would be doing that if I was a horse, we still have August to go...
The day was a triumph of organization for this hard working committee, as there were over 600 entries in 4 rings. I was a bit over ambitious in taking 6 horses to ride, and also helping 5 of the kids, but thanks to the most obliging, helpful attitude of the 3 Ring Marshalls, we all got through the day. Although at one point Nicci and I were on course at the same time, she in Ring 1 jumping a double clear on Monty in the 1 metre class, and me on Irish in Ring 2 in the 1.40 class. My horses all jumped great despite their 5 minute warm ups in most cases. Irish jumped a super round in the quite strong 1.40 class, so rideable and relaxed, to just tick off the back of an oxer in front to run 5th to the only double clear round Paul Athanasoff on Wirragulla Nicklaus. Jono Berry kept up his good form on Jamie Winning's stallion Quincy Z to be 2nd, and Emily Blinkworth and Romantic Dream 3rd. Cougar had a rider error pole in both the 1.20 and 1.30 classes, and Willy was clear and 4 in the 1.20, rider error in jump off, and a good round in the 1.30, quite a tough track for him. Ash was super, double clear in the 1.05 and just over jumping everything, and then super clear in the 1.15 til dumb jockey went left instead of right to the last, realized the error, spun around and jumped the last oxer at 3/4 pace, but still a foot above it, but had been lost too long and had time faults. Puma and Gav also good boys, booming around the 90 and 1m tracks for fun, despite the 5 minute warm ups, with Puma again amazing me with his unflappable nature for a 4 year old.
Kids were great. Sophie much more 'in the groove' and rode a lovely double clear on Levi to be 3rd in the 1.15. Clyde had his normal one rail per class, but is also much more rideable. Carrie had a not so good start in the 1.05 with 2 stops at the first fence, then a clear round! Then a super double clear in 1.15 to place. Nicci and Monty placed in the 1 m, Tarryn and Favourite looking more and more comfortable together, even though both Carrie and Tarryn have hardly ridden in the last few weeks due to the family moving house. Lizzie on her mare Betty are improving with each start.
Well done again to SJC for an extremely well run day, and to Davids Sheppard and Lawrence, and Mark Atkins for their great tracks in all rings.
